Becoming a night owl: Is Bangladeshi Gen-z embracing the nocturnal life eventually? Or the July ‘24 was exceptional?
Are you more creative when it's dark? Then you might be a night owl. While many people are most productive during the day, there's increasing interest in the benefits of working at night.
Night owls tend to be most energetic and alert later in the day and at night. This is often due to biological factors, such as differences in melatonin production, or it might be for any special reason. Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate sleep-wake cycles. This type of life style can last for life long or it can last for some couple of days, months, years in case of the special reason. While this is a global trend influenced by factors like technology, social media, and changing work patterns, it's particularly relevant in countries like Bangladesh where these factors are increasingly prevalent.
Creative individuals often find that the quiet and solitude of night sparks their imagination. The lack of distractions can help them to focus deeply and concentrate. Studies show that night owls might be better at solving complex problems. With less sensory input and a slower pace at night, they can think more deeply and analyze things better. While it's often thought that night owls are less productive, they can actually be very efficient. When they have the freedom to work on their own terms, they may find that they can accomplish later in the day.
Along with the other countries of world Bangladesh is also improving in ICT sector, that can be proved only by the numbers of active freelancers, who are earning valuable for foreign currencies for the country. And most of these freelancers are belongs to generation Z. As most of their buyers are living in another time zone, they have to communicate with them at the night when the buyers are awake at their morning time. This time zone issue is another cause of our Gen-Z becoming a night owl individual.
With the widespread availability of smartphones, laptops, and internet connectivity, young people in Bangladesh are spending more time online, often late into the night. You might be heard from your friend saying,” Why not you come and join with us in the gaming sessions?” which generally continues till late night, or seen anyone active at late night in the social media, or hanging out with others full night long with regular basis in both online and offline.
But July & August ‘24 might be that special period for the Bangladeshi Gen-Z. As I'm also belong to this generation, I can say these 2 months were be very uncertain and crucial for us. We were just passing our nights sleepless and continuously looking for the breaking news to come out in social media or the reliable new medias. Can anyone think of it, a whole generation is awake till the Fajr around 4:30 everyday only for the news! but it is true. The brutal July & floody August made many of us from this generation a night owl. But whatever they done at night but they did their duty properly in the day time.
July massacre was the unusual period of time for this new generation. (Background info- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_massacre ). Specially after the day light the things used to get equally very suspicious, mysterious and dangerous from the side of the former dictator. As the protesters becomes inactive and debacle at night time, law enforcement agencies and the former ruling party workers choose this time to suppress the protester students and the horrifying pictures and news used to come out at night. Others done their duty as a media, spreading the news to whole nation. It won’t be exaggerated if I say a part time group of night owl has freed Bangladesh from a 16 years long dictatorship under Hasina.
In conclusion, it can be said that not only the Gen-z in particular, a group of people in Bangladesh is leaning over the night-based work or entertainment programme. Which has both the good and bad sides varies on the person’s ability and mobility of work hour.
